Herman Mann would have had a similar image in mind when he called
Sampson the daughter of Columbia.

America.”American Antiquarian Society, Proceedings. 100 (1991): 45-79. Print.
This painting is important because it shows Sampson in action on the battlefield. This portrayal was not possible in her time because she had to be personified as Lady Columbia to make her palatable for audiences.
