More Musings...or What Does It All Add Up To?

The Female Review is not simply a poorly written and fabricated biography it is the product of the intersection of shifting post-revolutionary gender identities, gender anxieties, the allegorical Republican Mother and American revolutionary nostalgia.

I realized Sampson would have been acutely aware of the disadvantages early-American women faced because of their gender. Her transgression would have allowed her the advantage of viewing the world from a woman’s and a man’s eyes; I am sure her future looked brighter when she had on the uniform of a male soldier. Therefore, why would a woman with this in-depth knowledge of gender roles fall prey to a man who wanted to use her for his political agenda to encourage women to support America from their domestic sphere.  I think she was too street smart to be used by Mann.

I agree with Karen Weyler that she was a compelling woman who could persuade men to help her. After living as a man for about two years, I am sure she understood what would persuade a man more than any other woman of her time.
