What defines an American woman? First ask, “When did she live…”

I am continually fascinated by the search for older American texts. I feel the better I can understand these text, their contexts the closer I can come to comprehending America’s past, in order to frame its present.

I am of course particularly enthralled with my quest to find the voices of women in this past. My choice to research The Female Review has also revealed to me a personal interest in the narrative of the ever evolving definition of female gender.

I think researching a woman who defied the definition of ladylike, by fighting in The American Revolution, is the perfect place to begin exploring American gender rebels.
